The social work profession
The social work (SW) profession is internationally recognized, since Schools and Departments in SW operate in developed and developing countries worldwide. More than 50 English-language peer-reviewed scientific journals are published in the field of social work.
According to the international definition of Social Work (as decided by the General Assembly of the International Federation of Social Workers in 2014):
The profession of social work promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and empowerment of people. The principles of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility, and respect of diversity are fundamental to social work, which is based on theories of social work, social sciences, and general knowledge. Social work motivates people and social structures to cope with life challenges and enhance their personal and social well-being.
Social Work aims at preventing and addressing human problems and empowers individuals, groups, and communities to effectively deal with crises and improve their living conditions. SW consistently promotes the social integration of the socially excluded groups and the population subgroups that are at high risk of exclusion because of poverty, unemployment, abuse, racism, etc. It promotes social justice, human rights, and the improvement of human relationships. SW contributes to the social activation of the socially excluded groups or advocates to improve their living conditions, and it also works towards changing the social situations that promote social inequality and exclusion (Social Worker Practice – PD 23 FEK 6 30-1-1992)
