Department of Social Work

Hellenic Mediterranean University

Curriculum

1The undergraduate program (see attached) combines theoretical knowledge with the practical application of social work in work settings.

Curriculum structure

Credits and workload are allocated in each course. ECTS credits describe the student’s workload required to achieve the desired learning outcomes. Overall, the student should achieve 30 ECTS per semester and 240 ECTS for the successful completion of the curriculum (30 ECTS X 8 semesters). The overall workload is 900 hours per semester and 7,200 hours (900 X 8 semesters) for the successful completion of the SW studies.

During the 5th, 7th, and 8th semester, the Practice Placement-Supervision I, II, III is carried out, respectively. The Practice Placement-Supervision provides students the opportunity to associate theoretical knowledge with practice at-work in a social service/organization. Students are supported and guided through group supervision (3-hour group supervision weekly). Practice Placement-Supervision I, II, and III require work and involvement in the activities of a Social Service/Organization for 8, 22, and 32 hours per week, respectively.

Curriculum content

Studies in SW last four (4) years. During the eight semesters, 36 core courses and 21 optional courses are offered (from 5th to 8th semester). From the optional courses, the student chooses 4 (in the case that the student will undertake the writing of a thesis) or 6 (in the case of not undertaking a graduate thesis). To obtain the SW degree (Bachelor’s degree), the student should have successfully completed either 40 courses and their thesis or 42 courses.
